KEY POINTS

  • Prince William and Kate Middleton may be using bots to boost their Instagram account
  • Prince William and Kate Middleton's account cannot be surpassed by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle
  • Prince William's account needs to be more popular than Prince Harry's because he's the future king

Prince William and Kate Middleton have been accused of cheating in order to make sure that they will have more Instagram followers than Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

According to The New York Times, social media analysts looked at the activity for both Sussex Royal and Kensington Royal account and found out that no matter how popular Prince Harry and Markle are, they can’t seem to overtake the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

The publication said that it is possible Prince William and Middleton to be receiving followers boosts in the form of bots to ensure the monarchical hierarchy of Prince William being more important than Prince Harry because he’s the future king.

Instagram boosts could be purchased and paid for by the account owner or it may also be given them as a gift. Journalist Caity Weaver said that even though there was an increase in the number of followers Prince Harry and Markle after their bombshell exit, they still couldn’t catch up with Prince William and Middleton.

Based on the data gathered from the media monitoring software Cision, Prince Harry and Markle’ received vastly more global online attention compared to Prince William and Middleton from November 2017 to January 2020.

“Also, from @SussexRoyal’s debut in April 2019 - as a separate account from Kate and Wills’ - until Harry and Meghan’s bombshell announcement to quit royal life the pair had around 13.5 million likes more than the Cambridges,” The Sun wrote.

But Anna Gebremedhin, a data analyst, said that Prince William and Middleton taking the lead doesn’t mean that their account is more popular.

“Major fan Instagram accounts for William and Kate, which previously corresponded to the popularity of their official page, did not see growth aligned with their official account,” she said.

As of late, the Kensington Royal Instagram account has 11.2 million followers, while the Sussex Royal Instagram account also has the same number of followers.
