Prince William is following in Queen Elizabeth II’s footsteps, meeting with first responders who were on the scene at the Manchester bombing.

Her Royal Highness previously paid a visit to some of the victims, speaking with their families and doctors about the “wicked” attack that occurred. Similarly, Prince William heard harrowing accounts of the events that unfolded from the first people to arrive on the scene.

He first popped in to the Greater Manchester Police department, where he met with officer Michael Buckley, who was off on that fateful night but found himself tending to victims anyhow. The officer’s daughter had been at the concert and wasn’t able to reunite with her father until several hours after the fact.

“She ran to me but I couldn’t hold her because I was covered in blood. I told her I have got other people’s blood all over me,” he said.

Prince William also met with officer Chris Jenkins, who watched the chaos unfold from his home. He revealed to the 35-year-old royal that he lives just minutes from the arena and heard the blast from his window. He spent the night trying to relay messages to the authorities about what he was seeing and hearing, but describes the events that unfolded as “absolute chaos.”

“He [Prince William] was showing his respect and gratitude for what we did,” Jenkins later told People magazine of the surprise visit.

During the same visit, William met with emergency dispatcher Lisa Canovan. She told People he inquired about the first calls that came in and the overall feeling in the precinct. Canovan also said Prince William expressed concern for her, asking “about the support she was receiving too.”

“He was asking about when the call came in and what it was like in the room. In the beginning, we were kind of hoping it was a hoax,” she shared with the magazine.

Before Prince William’s surprise visit, Queen Elizabeth II popped in on victims recovering at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. There she visited with some of the young people affected by the incident. One particular victim, Evie Mills, told The Telegraph the Queen condemned the attack.

“It’s dreadful. Very wicked. To target that sort of thing,” Queen Elizabeth II said during her visit. She also assured Mills’ parents that “everyone is united” following the bombing.

After meeting with victims, the Queen toured the hospital. She met with doctors, nurses and other members of the hospital’s staff. One employee told The Telegraph she spoke with him about the tragedy and was absolutely heartbroken.

“The awful thing was that everyone was so young. The age of them,” she said.

In the days since the attack, a number of arrests have been made. According to British police, a student pilot named Ala Zakry was arrested on Monday. The Guardian reported that the suspect runs an online Tripoli marketplace called Hasoub Alafak, which allows users to obtain international electronic funds and internet payment services to buy things off Amazon and then import the items.

Zakry’s mother, as well as neighbors, were shocked by his arrest. His mom told The Guardian he was a “good boy.” Neighbors also couldn’t believe he was arrested in connection with the bombing.

“He said he was training to be a pilot at Shoreham Airfield and he had just completed doing that. I am really, really shocked by this. I can’t believe he had been arrested,” Violet Mainda, who owns the beauty parlor below his apartment, told The Telegraph.
