Prince Charles and Princess Diana tied the knot in 1981, but they divorced just 15 years later. However, as early as 1991, there was already an obvious indication that the royal couple’s marriage wasn’t working out.

In the book “William’s Princess,” royal author Robert Jobson detailed the events that took place during Princess Diana’s 30th birthday. He said that the Princess of Wales sent smoke signals to the attendees regarding her troubled marriage but no one picked up on her clue.

One of the most obvious indications that Prince Charles and Princess Diana were having a private war behind the closed doors was the fact that the former skipped his wife’s special day.

However, Jobson explained that Prince Charles’ absence didn’t have anything to do with him not wanting to celebrate Princess Diana’s birthday. In fact, he wanted to throw the Princess of Wales a bash. However, Prince William and Prince Harry’s mom refused.

“Diana had rebuffed his attempts to throw a celebration party, feeling, perhaps rightly, that the offer stemmed from a sense of propriety rather than any heartfelt desire to bring her happiness. In public, they just about managed to smile and put on a show of unity but in private it was war. The War of the Waleses,” he said.

Half a year later, the former prime minister announced Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s separation. The former couple separated for four years before they officially got divorced.

Following the announcement, the prime minister claimed that the separation wouldn’t prevent Princess Diana from becoming queen. However, Jobson thought the idea was quite absurd.

“It was a preposterous idea. How could Charles reign with his estranged wife at his side? The fairytale was a sham. Worse, of course, would follow,” he said.

Princess Diana passed away on Aug. 31, 1997, and she didn’t have the opportunity to become queen. Prince Charles remarried years later, and his wife, Camilla Parker Bowles is expected to receive the role after Queen Elizabeth dies.
