Princess Diana was only a toy for Prince Charles.

On Monday, Princess Diana would have turned 58 years old if she were alive. According to historian Piers Brendon, Prince Charles had a certain wish for a wife that Princess Diana could never fulfill.

“Charles felt that he could impose his own personality on her and she would become a female complement to him,” Brendon said.

“So she was a toy, a Barbie doll as far as he was concerned.”

Brendan’s opinion sprang from Prince Charles past interview with Alistair Cooke in 1976, when the Prince of Wales said that whoever he marries will have a hard job and will always be in his shadow. Unfortunately, things didn’t turn out that way.

“What Charles wanted in a marriage is a wife who would support him and, in Diana, he didn’t have that wife. So it was a really tragic mismatch,” another expert said.

Unlike what Prince Charles said, Princess Diana turned out to be more popular and loved by the people than him. In fact, the People’s Princess’ rising popularity caused tension between the couple.

A source told Sarah Bradford in her book “Diana” that the Prince of Wales couldn’t understand why the people wanted more of his wife than him. He couldn’t comprehend the fact that they prefer to see a beautiful woman than a man in a suit.

Prince Charles badly adjusted to the idea of sharing the limelight with Princess Diana. He resented Princess Diana’s popularity and it began to “poison their relationship.”

Even Queen Elizabeth II saw Princess Diana’s rising popularity and the monarch didn’t like it. The Queen couldn’t stand Princess Diana due to their different views on how they should live their royal lives and Her Majesty didn’t like the fact that she’s becoming a star, more of a celebrity than a princess.

In related news, Prince Charles has ramped up his preparations to become king with Camilla Parker Bowles. The Prince of Wales reportedly didn’t want to reign with Princess Diana as his queen, but he is now keen on making Camilla his queen.
