There are only two episodes left of "Serial." Serial Podcast

"Serial" episode 11, "Rumors," is the penultimate episode of the first season of the hit "This American Life" spinoff. As Sarah Koenig investigates the murder of Hae Min Lee and the conviction of Adnan Syed, can fans expect a satisfying ending based on the real-life implications of the case?

As much as we enjoy the narrative scope of "Serial" -- Koenig is a great storyteller -- the podcast is investigating a murder case, and Adnan's lawyer is working hard on an appeal hearing scheduled for January. The events depicted in "Serial" are still unfolding in real-time, and with the podcast wrapping up next week, it's unlikely Koenig could provide a sense of closure to listeners.

Touchstones From Last Week's Episode

"Serial" episode 10, "The Best Defense Is a Good Defense," focused on the trial itself and the work of Adnan's lawyer, Cristina Gutierrez. Koenig looks at the city of Baltimore during the time of the trial and possible prejudice that could have led to Adnan's conviction. Guiterrez comes across as abrasive during the trial, and her strategy was a bit muddled, as she would spend great lengths of time teasing out arguments that could have been confusing to the jury.

"Technically, Adnan is eligible for parole, but the chances of getting it are so slim for anyone with a life sentence for first-degree murder, but especially if you don’t show remorse. Because, you know, what if he’s a psychopath, right? Next time, on Serial," Koenig says to close out last week's episode of "Serial."

"Serial" Reading

The new episode of "Serial" is just one day away, and each week there are interesting articles dissecting the case, the podcast and its popularity. Below are few things you should be reading.

Should we expect a Hollywood ending from "Serial?" That's the question posited by Anna Brand for MSNBC. Since this is not fiction, there won't be a plot twist that will lead to a tidy conclusion that will satisfy listeners. Brand also brings up the concerns surrounding Koenig's intentions and the fervor for the show on the Internet, which has led to many donning their amateur sleuth hats.

Vox interviewed Colin Miller, an associate professor of law at the University of South Carolina, to discuss Adnan's chances of getting out of prison.

The Guardian had an interview with Adnan's family. Adnan's mother Shamim and brother Yusef listen to the podcast and comment on a few of the more memorable moments, such as the homecoming, featured on the show. "After the episode’s done, I think about it all day. What does this mean? What does that mean? Everything Sarah’s saying is new to me," Yusef said. Another interesting tidbit is Jay is a Reddit user.
