It's official: The Confederate flag no longer waves in front of the South Carolina State House in Columbia. Crowds gathered Friday morning to watch its removal, when some people chanted, "Take it down!" and "USA! USA!"

The push for the flag's removal began after a racially motivated shooting that killed nine people at a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina. After a heated debate over a bill enabling its removal that saw state Rep. Jenny Horne, a descendant of Jefferson Davis, tearing up on the floor of South Carolina House of Representatives Thursday, the measure passed by a 93-27 vote. The bill, requirin the flag to be removed within 24 hours, was quickly signed by Gov. Nikki Haley. The flag will be moved to the state's Confederate Relic Room and Miltary Museum for display, according to CNN.

Some angered, others jubilant, social media users went online to express themselves after the historic event. We rounded up some of the best celebratory responses to the flag removal.

Despite the celebration, there is a way to go before the Confederate flag is completely relegated to history. It's still possible to have license plates with the Confederate flag, various state flags still include versions of the Confederate flag, and the flag can still be used to mark graves of Confederate veterans buried in federal cemeteries.
