Queen Elizabeth was accused of having a flexible conscience and for betraying the idea of marriage when she did not only support Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s divorce but she also urged the couple to finalize it.

In the book “The Firm,” royal author Penny Junor said that Her Majesty serves as the Supreme Governor of the Church of England. As such, her insistence on Prince Charles and Prince Andrew’s respective divorces came as a shock to the nation.

“A columnist in the Catholic Herald accused the Queen of having a flexible conscience and that, by not only agreeing to but urging divorce on her son, she had ‘betrayed the ideal of marriage.’ The Dean of St Paul’s said that divorce was all right but marrying again was the problem – that was what constituted adultery in God’s eyes,” Junor said.

After Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s divorce was finalized, the palace released a statement saying that the heir to the throne has no plans to get married again. A poll on the Prince and Princess of Wales’ divorce day also showed that 56 percent of full-time Anglican clergy were opposed to the royal couple’s divorce. They also disapproved of Prince Charles remarrying again since he is the future King.

According to Junor, the results of the poll and the reaction towards Prince Charles’ divorce convinced the dad of two and Camilla Parker Bowles to stay away from the limelight for as long as possible. The couple was never photographed together for at least a couple of years.

But two years after Princess Diana’s death and three years after the late royal’s divorce, Prince Charles and Camilla were photographed together. During this time, the couple was already planning to confirm their relationship to the press.

The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall previously planned on confirming their relationship two years earlier, but they decided to not push through with it because of Princess Diana’s sudden death.
