Meghan Markle was recently criticized for wearing an above-the-knee dress for her outing with husband Prince Harry, but she didn't actually break any royal dress code.

The Duchess of Sussex was criticized when she stepped out in a black tuxedo minidress during her "Hamilton" date with Prince Harry. However, unknown to many a number of royals have worn short dresses too. In fact, even Queen Elizabeth II wore one when she was younger.

According to Ingrid Seward, a journalist for Daily Mail, even the Queen dared to show a glimpse of her knee when short hemlines were fashionable in the 60s and 70s. Ian Thomas who altered Her Majesty's dresses admitted that he received a call from the Queen's dresser, Bobo MacDonald, requesting him that the hems of the royal gowns be raised to a "more up-to-date length."

The publication shared a snap of Queen Elizabeth II wearing an above-the-knee length yellow dress. Princess Margaret was also photographed in a minidress.

Aside from the two royal sisters, Queen Elizabeth's daughter-in-laws Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson were also snapped in bold and daring short dresses. The Princess of Wales wore a black minidress at the Apollo 13 premiere in 1995. In fact, the People's Princess had to pull it down to avoid revealing too much thigh when she went out of her limousine.

The Duchess of York was also seen wearing a short polkadot dress. Its length was above Ferguson’s knee and in one photo the wind blew it away showing more of her skin.

Markle's sister-in-law Kate Middleton also wear dresses. Harper's Bazaar shared a number of shots when the Duchess of Cambridge was caught wearing above-the-knee dresses. In some occasions, Middleton didn't wear nude tights either.

When netizens slammed Markle for her wearing a short dress, others defended her by stating that Middleton also did the same.

"Seriously you're really sound ignorant cause we all have seen Kate wear short skirts and dresses. Let's not start acting like some of the royal women ain't wear something like this," Jasmine Harrison wrote.

"Give me a break. Kate wears tiny skirts all the time and you all don’t say anything," another one wrote.

Since it has been normal for royals to flaunt their legs, Seward compared them. For her, the royal with the best leg is Middleton since Princess Diana is no longer with us.
