  • An op-ed in Sydney Morning Herald said they gave Rebel Wilson a deadline to respond to their inquiries about her new relationship

  • Wilson seemingly confirmed the Herald’s account, saying on Twitter that "it was a very hard situation"

Rebel Wilson seemingly confirmed that she was forced to go public with her relationship with her girlfriend before she was ready.

Last week, the "Pitch Perfect" star, 42, revealed in an Instagram post that she is dating Ramona Agruma.

Days after her announcement, The Sydney Morning Herald published an op-ed by journalist Andrew Hornery saying that they gave Wilson a two-day deadline to respond to their inquiries about her relationship with the Lemon Ve Limon founder.

"It was with an abundance of caution and respect that this media outlet emailed Rebel Wilson's representatives on Thursday morning, giving her two days to comment on her new relationship with LA leisure wear designer Ramona Agruma, before publishing a single word," the article stated. "Big mistake. Wilson opted to gazump the story, posting about her new 'Disney Princess' on Instagram ... the same platform she had previously used to brag about her handsome ex-boyfriend, wealthy American beer baron Jacob Busch."

Social media users criticized the newspaper for how they handled the situation, including journalist Kate Doak. "So apparently it wasn't Rebel Wilson's choice to come out... The @smh/@theage have admitted to giving her a heads up 2 days in advance that they were going to 'out' her," Doak tweeted.

Wilson responded to Doak's tweet, writing, "Thanks for your comments, it was a very hard situation but trying to handle it with grace."

In a follow-up tweet, Doak encouraged Wilson and her girlfriend to "be kind to yourselves and take things at your own pace," adding that "it hurts massively to see this happen today."

However, Sydney Morning Herald editor Bevan Shields denied claims that the paper had "outed" Wilson in a statement shared online Sunday.

"Our weekly Private Sydney celebrity column last week asked Wilson if she wished to comment about her new partner. We would have asked the same questions had Wilson's new partner been a man," he wrote. "To say that the Herald 'outed' Wilson is wrong."

"Like other mastheads do every day, we simply asked questions and as standard practice included a deadline for a response," Shields continued. "I had made no decision about whether or what to publish, and the Herald's decision about what to do would have been informed by any response Wilson supplied."

Wilson came out Thursday, sharing a selfie with Agruma on Instagram. "I thought I was searching for a Disney Prince… but maybe what I really needed all this time was a Disney Princess #loveislove," the "Senior Year" actress captioned the snap.

Last month, Wilson confirmed in an interview with People that she is in a relationship without identifying Agruma or disclosing details of her own sexuality. She shared that a friend had set her up with her new love and that they talked on the phone for weeks before they met.

"That was a really good way to get to know each other. It was a bit old-school in that sense—very romantic," she said.
