A three-year-old Washington boy was bitten in the face by a pit bull that his mother had rescued during a trip.

The victim and his mother were on a trip to Clearlake Mountain, when they saw the dog wandering on the side of the road. The woman then picked up the dog and took it home, the Yakima County Sheriff‘s Office said.

After arriving back home, the woman left the pit bull unattended with the boy. She let them play outside their home while she put away groceries. Suddenly, she heard the boy screaming and rushed outside to find the dog biting and chewing the boy’s face, Komo News reported.

The woman managed to rescue the boy from the dog and called 911. By the time the officials arrived, a neighbor came over and shot the canine. The boy was rushed to a local hospital after which he was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he underwent surgery. Meanwhile, the pit bull was being tested for diseases.

The mother, however, had a different story to tell. Speaking to CBS-affiliated television station KIMA, she said she was in the mountains Saturday when she saw a starved puppy on the roadside. She decided to save the dog’s life and so she brought it to her car. The woman said the dog was gentle and seemed grateful.

She brought the dog home and immediately put up a social media post hoping somebody would come forward to adopt it. On Monday, a few children had come over to her home. She had tied the dog in the backyard and informed the children to stay away from it. While she was putting away groceries, the children went near the canine and it bite her son’s face. The woman ran outside after hearing her son screaming and somehow managed to get the dog off her son.

“I had to pry the jaws off of my son’s face... the images of that will not go away,” she said.

She immediately called 911 and rushed the boy to the hospital.

The woman said her son was recovering and that her family needed support and prayers.

“I pray to the Lord he won’t remember this, but he probably will,” she said.
