Robert Pattinson could have played Christian Grey in the “Fifty Shades” trilogy.

Pattinson became a household name due to the success of “Twilight” that spawned five films from 2008 to 2012. However, aside from the hit franchise, the actor could have been part of another popular movie series, the “Fifty Shades” trilogy. The “Good Time” actor hinted that he could have played the role of Dakota Johnson’s leading man in the erotic movie, a role eventually given to Jamie Dornan, if not for a “drunken meeting” with its author and producer, E.L. James, The Sun reported.

“I know the writer of the book, and before any of that happened, I had met her in Chateau Marmont,” he said. “Her friend told me, ‘That is E L James, she wrote ‘Fifty Shades of Grey.’ I was a little bit drunk and I literally kept forcing her to tell me every one of her fantasies and it was fun. I was absolutely terrified.”

In an interview with Reuters in 2015, Pattinson was asked about his thoughts on the fact that Christian Grey’s character was inspired by his performance as Edward Cullen. James admitted earlier that her “Fifty Shades” books were inspired by young adult fiction writer Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight.” “It’s kind of weird and also I’ve known Jamie for about 10 years,” the “Remember Me” star explained. “I haven’t actually read the book but I think it must be very, very different. I don’t see how it can work if it’s not different.”

Aside from losing the leading man role in the “Fifty Shades” trilogy, Pattinson also admitted that he was almost fired from the “Twilight” series due to his “rowdy behavior.” In addition to this, he was apparently “not smiling enough,” CinemaBlend reported.

Pattinson thought that his character and Kristen Stewart’s Bella should be serious all the time. However, the people around them thought the opposite as they believed teenage love should be “happy and having fun.” “I thought I was pretty safe,” Pattinson said (via CinemaBlend). “They flew up and were like, ‘You have to do the opposite of what you’re doing now or you’re going to get fired today.’”
