Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton need to follow some strict etiquette rules as members of the royal family.

Treska Roden, an etiquette expert from Australia, recently revealed the dos and don’ts of a royal, particularly those that Markle and Middleton may have been trained to do and not to do.

“It’s a beautiful course for ladies to do – to show them what Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle had to go through before they became part of the royal family,” she said (via Daily Mail).

Roden said that when shaking hands, royals are required to do so lightly. “You do two to three pumps from the elbow. Hands are perpendicular to the ground,” she said.

When it comes to table manners, Roden said that royals ought to use table napkin to dab the sides of their mouth and make sure that no stains or scraps are seen on their faces.

“When eating soup, you must scoop the soup outwards, away from the body, before you tip the soup into your mouth,” she said.

And in order to eat as neatly as possible, a royal should run the bottom of the spoon along the edge from the inside of the bowl so there are no dribbles.

When using cutlery, the knife should be held using the right hand, and the fork should be on the left hand. “Elbows locked into your sides,” she added.

Royals also need to be like Queen Elizabeth II when drinking a cup of tea. “You keep your pinky in and you pinch the handle. You do not actually loop your finger through the handle,” Roden said.

When sitting down in public, female royals are expected to master the so-called Duchess Slant wherein their ankles and knees are placed close to each other. Hands are typically positioned on top of the thighs.
