KEY POINTS

  • Ryan Garcia is not a big fan of Floyd Mayweather's public image
  • Garcia believes Canelo Alvarez will win if a rematch with Mayweather happens
  • Garcia's next opponent remains unknown, but he is not short of options

Interim WBC lightweight champion Ryan Garcia knows what it takes to win, an example of which he showed when he got up and conquered Luke Campbell in his last fight.

One reason behind the 22-year-old’s success is that he is in good hands.

Garcia is handled by the same trainer of Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, Eddy Reynoso. The same head coach is behind the run of the Mexican’s boxing run where he only has a lone loss to show. This was at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013.

Mayweather outclassed Alvarez at that time in 12 rounds with the Mexican admitting that he was still inexperienced and young then.

But a lot has changed from that time with Alvarez racking up one win after the other. The Mexican pugilist is a whole lot different and has evolved into a better fighter.

Hence, it begs to ask how an evolved Alvarez would stand up to Mayweather at his best. In the eyes of “KingRy,” the Mexican would win if a second meeting is to be staged, ESPN reported.

"Canelo wins. At his best, he is much smarter and knows how to maneuver in the ring much better. Pretty Boy was good, but if he went directly against Canelo, he would be knocked out. He would have to box and he (Alvarez) is a big guy by nature," Garcia stated.

Also, the 22-year-old pug admitted that he was never in favor of the persona Mayweather portrayed in public. This was about throwing an "image of glorifying money," something he feels is wrong.

"What I had a problem with [when it came to] Floyd was how he represented himself when he got to the top. He threw around the image of glorifying money. I don't like that," Garcia explained.

It remains to be seen if Mayweather will react to Garcia’s comments. However, he does have his sights on Gervonta Davis, someone that the unbeaten American boxer is backing.

Garcia does have options and one could be a fight with Devin Haney. The WBC will reportedly order a title fight between the two, but there remains no clarity on whether that would take place.

Aside from that, there is the dream fight with Manny Pacquiao. That too is up in the balance and has yet to be made official.

Clearly, Garcia has options ahead of him and the boxing world wants to see the boxing sensation back in the ring soon.
