  • Selena Gomez believes social media platforms ruin people’s lives
  • Gomez feels she would be happy to leave the photo-sharing app if she finds a more balanced option
  • The "Rare" hitmaker also noted that it was scary returning to social media after taking a break from it

Social media can be a dark place to be in. If it can make lives, it can destroy lives, too, and Selena Gomez feels that social media is doing really harmful things to the current generation.

Speaking in an interview with Dazed, the 27-year-old musician believes social-media platforms like Instagram are one of the many things that could spoil someone’s life. The singer further stated that the photo-sharing app put a lot of “pressure” on people to be what they are not in real life.

When asked if she would leave Instagram given the chance, the “Lose You To Love Me” hitmaker revealed that she would be happy to leave the app if she finds a more “balanced” option. Gomez did not think twice in saying that the app is “destroying” people’s lives and their identity.

“I think I would have a lot of people not liking me for saying yes. If I could find a balanced, happy medium that would be great, but I would be lying if I said that it is not destroying some of my generation, their identity,” Gomez said.

The “We Don’t Talk Anymore” singer took a break from Instagram in 2018 after she was attacked by netizens for gaining weight due to Lupus. In a recent interview, she admitted that she felt really disheartened when people started to attack her for gaining weight when they did not know what she was going through. The singer further stated that this was one of the main reasons why she decided to leave social media for a bit.

Later in the discussion, Gomez also explained how scary it was to return to social-media platforms like Twitter and IG. “What I do now is to only go on it when I feel like I need to, and then I'll just log off, I won't take time to explore or look at anything else,” Gomez said.

Meanwhile, Gomez is riding high on the success of her new album “Rare” that made her earn her third number one album on the Billboard 200 chart. The album has received universal acclaim from critics as well as fans. Rolling Stone said that her third solo album is an “act of divine ruthlessness” and gave it four stars out of five.

On the other hand, Gomez announced the launch of her new makeup line, Rare Beauty, via Twitter. The musician revealed that her cosmetic products will be available in North America Sephora locations later this year.
