  • Shawn Mendes said his girlfriend Camila Cabello is all about family and friends

  • Mendes felt lonely and isolated for seven years before he dated Cabello

Shawn Mendes was a bit lonely before he started dating Camila Cabello, but she changed that by teaching him to reach out to his family and friends.

Mendes and Cabello are very private about their romance, but he got candid and opened up about their relationship in the cover story for VMan's latest issue. The "Treat You Better" hitmaker credited Cabello for his closer relationship with his family and friends.

"I don't know if it was something that was a 'me thing' or a 'men thing,' but I think for seven years, I was on such a speedy path down one way with blinders on, and I wasn't keeping in touch with my family and friends...but when I landed with Camila, immediately she had her family around more," he was quoted by People, as saying.

"[She's] all about the family and friends and it really made me like, 'Oh, I should call my mom.' I started reaching back out to my family and friends and all of these connections I felt were further away...I felt a little bit alone out there and she changed that for me."

Mendes and Cabello have been dating since July 2019. They have been good friends for years before they decided to take their relationship to the next level. Also, both were very open about really liking each other even before they started dating. In fact, Mendes told his girlfriend in the Netflix documentary “In Wonder” that every love song he ever wrote was about her.

Meanwhile, the "Cinderella" star admitted that she had feelings for Mendes since 2015 when they collaborated for the hit song "I Know What You Did Last Summer." For her, they bonded more than friends and the feelings were mutual, but they were too young at the time.

“I think he did too, but we were both really young, and he was experiencing the pressures of his career. I don’t think we knew what to do with those feelings. It was this awkward thing where we both liked each other, but we weren’t together. It was just weird,” Cabello said.

In October, there were rumors that the "Senorita" hitmakers already split. But Cabello ended the speculations about their breakup by sharing a sweet message while promoting Mendes' new album "Wonder" and calling him "my love."

"The world could use some magic, beauty, and Wonder always, but especially right now," Cabello wrote on Instagram.

"@shawnmendes what a gorgeous gift to the world. He’s crafted this album with every last bit of his soul, his spirit, and his essence with the purest of intentions. My love, I’m so proud of the person you are and I’m so excited for people to see and hear your heart."
