Kate Middleton has been in possession of Princess Diana’s engagement ring ever since Prince William proposed to her with it in 2010, but according to a documentary, Meghan Markle is the one who technically might have ended up with it.

According to to the Amazon Prime documentary “The Diana Story,” the sapphire engagement ring, believed to be worth over £300,000, was actually Prince Harry’s, because he asked to get it when he and Prince William were each allowed to choose pieces from her jewelry collection for themselves after her death. In the film, Diana’s former butler, Paul Burrell, revealed that when Prince William was planning to propose to Middleton, his brother offered the ring to him instead of keeping it for himself and his future wife.

“Harry said to him: ‘Wouldn’t it be fitting if she had mummy’s ring?’” Burrell said. “Then one day that ring will be sat on the throne of England. Harry gave up his precious treasure. His one thing he kept from his mother, he gave to his brother. That’s selfless, kind and exactly who Diana was.”

Of course, while he did give up the meaningful ring, it didn’t mean Prince Harry didn’t have a connection to his mother when he presented Markle with an engagement ring of her own. The ring he designed, which was custom, featured two other diamonds from Princess Diana’s collection, as well as a stone from Botswana.

Jewelry the late Princess wore is often seen amongst members of the royal family, including pieces that were in the general royal collection, though the way some of the pieces have been reimagined isn’t as widely accepted.

Camilla Parker Bowles has sported an emerald and diamond brooch at events like her husband’s reception to honor his 50-year anniversary as the Prince of Wales, but royal fans recognized it as the pendant of a necklace that Diana wore in 1986, and fans reacted negatively to her repurposing it, saying it was in “poor taste.”

However, the necklace is actually a royal family heirloom and belongs to Queen Elizabeth, and it was added to the Duchess of Cornwall’s collection after her 2005 wedding.
