She is often pitted against Princess Diana even more than 20 years after the former’s death, but a move Camilla Parker Bowles reportedly made with a piece of jewelry Princess Diana once owned could serve to give her more grief from the public.

According to the Sun, the Duchess of Cornwall sported an emerald and diamond brooch for a Buckingham Palace reception celebrating her husband’s 50th anniversary as the Prince of Wales—but eagle-eyed royal watchers recognized the piece as something else. As it turns out, the pendant for the brooch originally came from a necklace—one Princess Diana wore at the Vienna Burgh Theatre in April 1986.

Fans who noticed the brooch quickly reacted in a negative manner, calling the decision to change it and wear it “poor taste” and asking if the Duchess had “no shame.” However, the piece is actually not one which belonged to Diana and it wasn’t from her personal collection. The necklace was actually a royal family heirloom and belongs to the Queen, so it was added to the Duchess of Cornwall’s own collection after she wed Prince Charles in 2005.

In addition, even if the piece had once belonged to Diana, she wouldn’t be the only one to alter jewelry from her collection, as Kate Middleton famously removed diamonds from a pair of her late mother-in-law's sapphire earrings, while Meghan Markle came under fire for changing the band on her engagement ring from Prince Harry, which included two diamonds from Diana’s personal collection. Markle was heavily criticized for the move, which many deemed distasteful and disrespectful to the ring she was initially gifted by Prince Harry.

In her will, Diana left her personal jewelry collection to her sons with the intention of letting them give the pieces to their own wives as they saw fit.
