In a disturbing incident, a 22-year-old stalker hacked a woman to death with an ax in broad daylight. He then hugged the dead body tightly till the police arrived and pulled him away forcefully.

Ganesh Meena, hailing from the northern Indian state of Rajasthan, was arrested and charged with murder Sunday, reported News 18.

Reports said the victim, Shanti Devi, was married and had two sons. She was working under a government scheme and was at her worksite when the brutal incident happened.

The accused was harboring a one-sided obsession with Devi for the past many months. Though he approached her many times, she spurned his advances. Devi also complained to her husband about Meena.

When Devi was at her worksite Sunday, Meena approached her again. However, he got violent when the woman refused to talk to him and used his ax to hack her. He attacked her repeatedly till she breathed her last.

Though other workers present at the scene tried to save the woman, the accused scared them off, swinging his weapon at them. Police found him lying on the ground, hugging the dead body of the woman. Officers asked him to move away, but Meena refused and clung to the lifeless body. Finally, the officers had to use force to move him away.

He was immediately arrested and charged with murder. The victim's body was sent for an autopsy.

The woman's cremation will be done after her husband, who is working in a neighboring state, returns home.

A similar case was reported earlier this month in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh when a 17-year-old girl was allegedly murdered by her jilted lover. The girl was on her way to attend private lessons when she was found dead. Police said she sustained an internal injury on the left side of her forehead, possibly after being forcefully hit with a blunt object. The postmortem examination confirmed she was not sexually assaulted.
