A man in India has admitted to running a truck over his lover and trying to pass off the murder as an accident after she forced him to marry her, police said.

The 28-year-old victim, Manpreet Kaur, was found dead on a highway in Bijnor, a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, on the night of Sept. 18.

Police initially believed that the victim was run over by a large vehicle in a road accident as Kaur's body and head were found crushed.

However, a detailed investigation revealed that the "accident" was staged and Kaur's lover and live-in partner 26-year-old Nafees Ahmed was behind the murder.

Ahmed confessed to the crime while he was detained for questioning. He was booked on charges of murder and causing the disappearance of evidence, police said, The Times of India reported.

Kaur's body was identified by her 29-year-old husband Sukhveer Singh. According to the police sources, five years after her marriage with Singh, Kaur fell in love with Ahmed and moved in with the latter three years back.

Singh told the police that Kaur wanted to marry Ahmed while Ahmed was reluctant about it. This hint gave a major lead to the investigators who took Ahmed into custody for questioning. Ahmed confessed to killing Kaur as she was pressurizing him to marry her.

Ahmed took her out on a drive with him in his truck on Sept. 18 and murdered her, police said, as per India Today.

"When they reached a desolate stretch, he hit her on the head with an iron rod. When she lost consciousness, he placed her on the road and ran his truck over her body and then her head," Dharamveer Singh, a senior investigating officer said.

Last month, a 24-year-old man from Pennsylvania was arrested for beating to death his girlfriend and trying to cover up the murder. The suspect, identified as Nicholas Forman, hid the body of his 22-year-old girlfriend, Sabrina Harooni, inside his house for more than 10 hours before taking it to a nearby hospital. While at the hospital, Forman claimed that Harooni was injured in an attack from a group of women who followed them home from the bar. However, investigators reviewed CCTV footage from the bar and realized that it was a lie.
