  • The game is designed as a cooperative multiplayer shooter

A new “Dino Crisis” game might not be coming any time soon, but Capcom’s newest IP might just be able to satisfy the itch that many of the classic PS1 game’s fans have.

During the most recent State of Play event by Sony, Capcom revealed “Exoprimal,” a third-person action game set in a sci-fi world with a big dinosaur problem. As strange as the premise might sound, the game actually seems very interesting based on the reveal trailer.

In the year 2043, hordes of dinosaurs have been invading the modern world via mysterious vortexes that appear out of thin air. High-tech exosuits were created for brave fighters to counter this threat to humanity’s existence.

“Exoprimal” is primarily a multiplayer co-op game with a heavy emphasis on tactics and exosuit synergies between players. Each suit specializes in different fields, and players will have to figure out what works best in a given scenario.

Based on the trailer, there are exosuit types for each of the usual character classes found in similar games. There’s a ranged suit built for overwhelming firepower, an agile melee suit with aerial combos and a tank-type suit with a holographic shield like Reinhardt from “Overwatch.” There’s a support-type healer and what appears to be a stealth-oriented suit as well. Players can swap their exosuits on-the-fly should they need to change tactics.

The trailer suggested that a story campaign will be available, but it’s unclear if it can be experienced alone in a singleplayer mode.

Other details regarding the game’s other systems are sparse as well, but more information is expected to become available in the coming weeks with a developer commentary video set to release soon.

So far, the community’s response has been a mixture of excitement and disappointment.

Some fans said they were looking forward to a new game, likening “Exoprimal” to the bug-infested battles of the “Earth Defense Force” series, while other people lamented the fact that this wasn’t a new “Dino Crisis” game. In any case, fighting hordes of dinosaurs is a refreshing change of pace to the ever-popular zombie apocalypse scenario,

“Exoprimal” is slated for a 2023 release date.
