For the Golden State Warriors, the summer saw more of losing key players than bringing in new ones. The only notable new name is D’Angelo Russell, an acquisition seen by most as a way to fill up the slack of an injury Klay Thompson. However, there are other positions to fill such as the one left by Kevin Durant and DeMarcus Cousins. If one looks back, the player most likely to step up to that is Draymond Green.

For the coming season, there is no doubt that Green and Stephen Curry will have to find ways of keeping the Dubs competitive. They find themselves in a pretty competitive Western Conference division with several teams getting stronger. That list includes the Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Clippers. Not to be discounted as well are the Portland Trail Blazers and the Denver Nuggets. The Warriors could still make the playoffs although there is no telling how far they will go.

Green will have to double his efforts for the coming NBA season. He showed last season what he could do, turning in triple-double performances that helped the Warriors 2018-19 campaign. But with Thompson expected to miss a large part of the season, he and Curry will have to at least double their numbers next season. The 29-year-old will need to do a yeoman’s job to keep the Dubs head afloat as he fills up a severely depleted frontline.

Worth noting as well is that Green could be motivated by the fact that he is set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer. Unraveling a worthy performance is a must if he is to get a max contract from the Warriors or other teams. But this early, Curry feels that Golden State should reward the 35th overall pick of the 2012 NBA Draft with a contract extension and give him his due, The Athletic reported.

At any rate, this is the direction that Green’s camp and the Warriors are headed. There is no question that Draymond feels he deserves to be compensated for his hard work and talent – a reason why the Warriors were able to bag three NBA titles. The Dubs seem to be on rebuild mode right now, something that was pointed out in a previous article. However, keeping key pieces is a must – referring to their original big three of Curry, Thompson, and Green.
