Legendary physicist Stephen Hawking met former England football captain David Beckham at an event hosted by Google on Monday, May 11. “I’m always being compared to you as a British icon and sometimes you rate higher and sometimes I do,” he wrote, in playful banter, according to the Mirror UK. Becks, who joined Instagram on his 40th birthday, took to the photo-sharing apps on Tuesday and shared a touching picture.

The retired footballer wrote that it was an honor to meet Professor Hawking and that he was amazed at what the theoretical physicist had said to him. His fashion designer wife, Victoria Beckham, also took to Instagram and shared a picture of her husband and the British genius. The picture shows the former Spice Girl standing behind Beckham and reading Hawking’s screen. She took the opportunity to thank Google for an inspiring evening.

It was the first meeting of the two British household names. The former footballer was dressed in a smart black suit and white shirt as he sat next to the professor reading the messages on his screen. Victoria was also seen reading the messages of the 73-year-old Cambridge-educated physicist and cosmologist.

Professor Hawking has been seen in celebrity circles of late rubbing shoulders with several A-listers. When Eddie Redmayne won the Academy Awards for best actor for “The Theory of Everything,” Stephen took to Facebook and congratulated the actor in a brief and touching note. Redmayne portrayed the renowned physicist in the award-winning biopic that shows Hawking's struggle with ALS.

At the BAFTA Awards in February, the physicist had the star-studded audience roaring with laughter. He made a joke at host Stephen Fry’s expense, saying he was “better looking” than Fry. The Oxford-born star is enjoying his time on the celebrity circuit, where he has entertained a gaggle of adoring celebrities. Hawking lit up the hearts of teenage girls all over the world by explaining the cosmological effect of Zayn Malik leaving One Direction in April. The physicist will also attend the Glastonbury Festival in England next month with the likes of rapper Kanye West and Pharrell Williams.
