KEY POINTS

  • Steve Kerr's yearly salary is $5 million
  • Stephen Curry is getting $40 million this season alone
  • Kerr has 8 rings while Curry has 3

Steve Kerr’s net worth is at least $18 million. The Golden State Warriors head coach is compensated handsomely but still lags behind the team’s superstars in terms of income.

Kerr took over the head coaching duties of the Warriors from Mark Jackson in 2004. Back then, Golden State only showed little promise, but Kerr was able to turn things around for the team. Under his watch, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson became prominent All-Stars and more complete players. However, critics claim that all Kerr did was inherit a good team from his predecessor, not giving him much credit for the Finals run of the Warriors.

What many did not know is that it was his first time as a head coach. He ran the Phoenix Suns behind the scenes as its President of Basketball Operations and General Manager from 2007 to 2010. After that, he became a TV analyst for Turner Network Television or TNT.

In 2014, the former Chicago Bulls player signed a 5-year, $25 million contract to coach Golden State, per Spotrac. This means he gets $5 million per year until the 2018-2019 season. When compared to what the team’s superstar is getting, Kerr’s pay looks pale in comparison. Curry, the 2-time MVP of the league, is getting at least $34 million per year after signing a whopping 5-year extension in 2017 worth $201,158,790. According to CNBC, this translates to Curry earning as much as seven times what his head coach received in the 2017-2018 season.

At present, the 6-time NBA All-Star is receiving $40 million per year, and it will get bigger in the next two seasons, according to Spotrac. The deal locks him up with the team until the 2021-2022 season, but it also secures him $45,780,966 for one season. The 3-time NBA champion is set to enter the free agent market when the 2022 season starts. At 34 years old, Curry can still offer a significant amount to play the rest of his career at Golden State, barring any major injuries or dip in production along the way.

Kerr and Curry have so much in common. Both are known as outside specialists, although the latter was able to level up his game so much more than a shooter. Both own multiple rings, with Kerr winning five: three alongside Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls and also winning twice with Tim Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs. In terms of total rings in the NBA, Kerr’s tally outnumbers Curry’s easily, he has won eight: five as a player and three as a head coach.

The 54-year-old Beirut, Lebanon native can demand a bigger extension from the Warriors’ front office once his current deal expires. However, with the NBA currently suspended indefinitely because of the pandemic, everything remains up in the air. Golden State can use the idle time mapping out their future while waiting for its stars to recuperate from injuries.
