A police pursuit and an ensuing shootout resulted in the discovery of human remains in the truck of a suspect's vehicle in Michigan.

The discovery was made Sunday afternoon when Dearborn police officers were chasing a vehicle believed to be involved in an endangered missing person case through Normile Street, Michigan State Police (MSP) said in a series of tweets.

However, at some point during the pursuit, police lost the suspect's vehicle. A short distance later, the vehicle was found crashed in a residential area near the intersection of Wyoming and Tireman in Detroit, WXYZ reported.

As police approached the crashed vehicle, gunfire began between Dearborn police officers and the suspect.

"As the Dearborn officers approached the crash scene there was an exchange of gunfire between officers and the suspect," one of the tweets said.

After the scene was cleared following the shootout, the suspect was found dead in the driver's seat with a gunshot wound, officials revealed. Police also discovered human remains in the trunk of the suspect's vehicle after a search, according to Detroit Free Press. The remains were not identified by the authorities.

Another person who was in the suspect's vehicle was found injured due to the crash and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

"No officers or members of the public were hurt," officials confirmed.

It was not immediately clear whether a bullet from the police's firearm or their own weapon killed the suspect. Cops were working with medical examiners to determine the cause of the suspect's death.

Identities of the suspect and the other passenger were not provided by the authorities.

Detroit's Homicide Task Force was investigating the matter, which officials believe may have ties to another out-of-state homicide case.

"The HTF is handling the investigation which may have ties to another out-of-state homicide investigation," the tweet added.

Michigan police and Detroit police were called to assist Dearborn Police with the investigation. After the incident, vehicular traffic was blocked and residents were asked to stay away from the crime scene.

"As you can imagine this is a complicated scene and this investigation will take a considerable amount of on scene investigation," MSP concluded.
