Everybody knows that Taylor Swift gets over her heartbreaks by writing songs about her ex-boyfriends. “Dear John” was about John Mayer, “Back to December” was about Taylor Lautner, while “Out of the Woods” was for Harry Styles, to name a few.

This time, Swift wrote the song “Better Man” for the country music group Little Big Town. The lyrics go: “I know I’m probably better off on my own / Than loving a man who didn’t know what he had when he had it / And I see the permanent damage you did to me / Never again, I just wish I could forget when it was magic.”

When the song was released, people began speculating that it might be about Scottish DJ Calvin Harris, according to E! News. However, a source told the publication that the song was written years ago — way before Swift even got together with Harris.

On the other hand, Elle speculated that it might be about her most recent ex-boyfriend Tom Hiddleston. The lyrics “I know I'm probably better off all alone / Than needing a man who could change his mind / At any given minute / And it's always on your terms,” spoke about their possible struggles while the actor was shooting “Thor: Ragnarok” in Australia.

Whatever the case, Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild told Time that the song is “really special” to Swift, and when they heard it, they fell in love with it, too.

“She sent us this song, and it was one that was really special to her,” explained Fairchild. “She thought of us because of the harmonies.”

For her, the song is best left for the listener’s interpretation. “Everybody has a better man. It might have been a lover, or a parent that disappointed you. I think the beauty of that storytelling is that we can all relate to being disappointed in someone and still loving them, but saying ‘Enough is enough,’” she said. “This would have been amazing if you would have gotten your act together. That's kind of a fun song to sing.”
