An Oklahoma teacher was arrested and charged with three counts of second-degree rape after she confessed to having sex with her foster son several times.

Stephanie Cowan, of Pryor, Oklahoma, has admitted to having sexual intercourse with a teenage boy she had custody of through the Department of Human Services (DHS), according to KOTV, a CBS-affiliate in Oklahoma Wednesday. The teen was placed in Cowan’s care last October, according to a police affidavit.

The investigation started after the boy reported having sex with his foster mother at their home in Salina, according to the Pryor Police Department. The boy claimed the two first had sex in November after a trip to Florida.

"She advised the first time they had sex was in his room, the second time was in her room and the third time was in the bathroom of her residence," Pryor Police Department. Assistant Chief James Willyard told KOTV.

Cowan revealed she had sex with the teen on three other occasions, authorities said. Officials have removed the teen from her home.

The relationship had apparently caused Cowan emotional distress.

"She was so upset because he was a kid that she had to go to the doctor and get on anxiety medicine," Willyard said.

DHS said it often paired with a private company called DCCCA, which helped place the teen in Cowan's custody.

"We have many safeguards and checks in place to ensure safety of all the foster families we support," the company said in a statement. "All of these safeguards are not foolproof in predicting human behavior."

After news broke of the incident, Pryor Junior High School announced it had suspended Cowen.
