A 36-year-old teacher in Texas turned herself over to authorities Tuesday after allegations she had a sexual relationship with a male student.

Randi Renee Chaverria, who had taught at Round Rock High School until resigning on Nov. 19, allegedly had sexual contact with a student, including oral sex in the classroom, on or around Oct. 16, according to court documents.

She faces a second-degree felony charge of an improper relationship between an educator and a student. If found guilty, she could receive 20 years in prison.

Chaverria has not entered a plea and no attorney has spoken on her behalf. She was released from Williamson County jail on Tuesday after posting bond.

The student told Round Rock Police that "on several occasions" Chaverria contacted him and had sexual contact with him. Investigators say that text messages sent between Chaverria and the student back up his claims.

Chaverria served as a Family and Consumer Science teacher. She won an award for Secondary Teacher of the Year in May and was involved with organizing community service projects for her students.

“Safety is the top priority of Round Rock High School and Round Rock ISD. Ensuring a safe and secure learning environment requires partnership between students, parents, campus and district staff, as well as law enforcement,” Round Rock High School principal Matt Groff said in a letter to local families, indicating that the school plans to work closely with authorities on the case.

During the 2017-2018 school year, 429 cases of inappropriate relationships with students were opened against Texas teachers.

In September 2017, a Texas passed a law that would impose harsher penalties on school administrators who stay silent when educators molest students.
