A three-month-old infant's body was found dumped inside a mini truck parked on the roadside. The driver of the vehicle found the body tightly wrapped in a cloth.

The incident happened in the Indian state of Gujarat, The Times Of India reported. According to Naresh Parmar, owner of the vehicle, he left his mini truck on the roadside near his house Thursday night. When he went back to his vehicle the next day morning, he noticed something in the trunk.

"I found something wrapped in a cloth, thrown in the trunk of my vehicle. On checking, I found a dead infant boy in it after which I immediately informed the police," Parmar said in his complaint.

He immediately alerted neighbors and police officials, who found that the infant had died hours ago.

According to the police officials, an autopsy was carried out on the body. "The postmortem has revealed that the infant was three months old and we are yet to find out the reason behind the death. CCTV footage is being checked and further investigation is on,” a senior police official told The Indian Express.

It is not clear whether the baby was already alive when it was dumped in the truck. Police have filed a case against unknown persons for secretly burying or disposing of the body of an infant.

Recent studies have proved that the outbreak of COVID-19 has resulted in an increase in the number of children abandoned after birth. A nonprofit had recently revealed that there was a 20% increase in the number of newborns arriving at child adoption centers post-COVID outbreak. Experts say with all facilities shut down, terminating an unwanted pregnancy has become difficult. For the same reason, many people from the poverty-stricken areas of India have resorted to abandoning the babies.

A shocking case of abandonment was reported earlier this month when a newborn was found hanging from the toilet window of a hospital in the Indian state of Telangana. Police said the newborn was murdered before being hung from the window grill. Police recovered CCTV visuals from the hospital which showed two women walking in with the infant. One woman was seen entering the toilet with the baby and locking the door.
