The official title for the “Top Gun” sequel has just been revealed by cast member Tom Cruise.

“Top Gun: Maverick” will serve as the follow-up to the 1986 hit movie. Joseph Kosinski will be directing the film that will chronicle the lives of the fighter pilots who are forced to learn how to make use of new technologies.

While speaking with Access Hollywood, Cruise said he didn’t want a number in the title because he felt it wasn’t necessary. The actor added that “Maverick” will shoot within a year. However, Cruise still doesn’t have an estimate for when it will be released.

When asked what the sequel will be all about, Cruise said, “Aviators are back, the need for speed. We’re going to have big, fast machines. It’s going to be a competition film like the first one, and it’s going to be in the same vein and the same tone as the first.”

He added that “Top Gun: Maverick” will serve as a progression for his character, Maverick.

As of late, it is still unclear which of the original cast members will return to reprise their roles. But Val Kilmer, who played the role of Iceman in the original film, expressed his interest in starring in the sequel. On his Instagram account, the actor posted a photo of himself wearing sunglasses. He captioned the snap saying that he still has the moves as Iceman.

Meanwhile, the original “Top Gun” was directed by the late Tony Scott. The original film starred Kelly McGillis as Charlotte, Anthony Edwards as Goose, Tom Skerritt as Viper, Meg Ryan as Carole, Tim Robbins as Merlin, Michael Ironside as Jester, Rick Rossovich as Slider, John Stockwell as Cougar, Barry Tubb as Wolfman, Clarence Gilyard as Sundown and more.

“Top Gun: Maverick” will be produced by Skydance CEO David Ellison and Jerry Bruckheimer. They will be teaming up with Cruise, who will also serve as producer, according to Variety. At present, the actor is on a press tour for his upcoming movie, “The Mummy.” The film is slated to hit theaters in the United States on June 9.
