The U.S. advertising industry is the largest in the world. Each year, companies spend around $130 billion on digital ads alone in the country to raise awareness for their products and services and ultimately to improve their sales. But which industry is the biggest spender in online ads?

Interestingly, the industry spending the most on digital advertising isn’t one that makes a particular product but one that sells many products from different brands and producers. According to an eMarketer report, the retail industry accounted for almost 22 percent of total digital ad spending in the U.S. in 2019. While retails also tops the ranking for most overall ad spending, the share of digital spend is even larger for the vertical.

Automotive and financial services ranked second and third, and each accounting for around 12 percent of digital ad spend. Verticals concentrating more on traditional ads were the pharmaceuticals and healthcare sector and, to a smaller extent, the travel and tourism industry.
