  • Newcastle has Lucas Digne on their radar in the January transfer window
  • The Magpies are battling Chelsea and Leicester City in the chase for the French defender
  • Digne's decision will depend on whether he wants a first-team opportunity or winning a silverware

Another name has been mentioned to be on the radar of Newcastle United with reports that the Magpies are now after Lucas Digne of Everton.

The 28-year-old defender faces a grim future at Goodison Park, someone who has not seen action in the Toffees’ last three matches.

A potential move to St. James’ Park in the January transfer window is possible although the Magpies are not the only ones interested in the French defender, the Mirror reported.

With Digne hardly getting playing time, his situation is worsened by the fact that the French player has had a falling out with Everton boss Rafa Benitez earlier this month, the Telegraph reported.

Aside from that, he missed the team’s match against Chelsea due to illness, further raising questions of his future with the Toffees.

Moreover, there is word that Vitaliy Mykolenko could be on his way to Merseyside, further strengthening the possibility of seeing Digne moving out as early as January.

But the question is where he could be headed.

Aside from Newcastle United, Chelsea and Leicester City are two other clubs linked to the footballer. Hence, it may all boil down to the team that can settle his asking fee.

Digne is earning £119,000 ($157,000) a week, part of the current deal he signed with the Toffees earlier this year.

With at least three teams trying to box out one another, it will be interesting if Newcastle United will be successful in their pursuit of Digne.

One thing that may go against the Magpies' aggressive push to acquire several marquee names is the fact that it all has to undergo a process.

Although they have funds to spare, Magpies manager Eddie Howe will have his work cut out for him as he tries to get his current and recruits on the same page.

In the case of Digne, it could do wonders for him with a possible chance of being on the first team.

But if the French national wants to join a team that can immediately compete for a title, Chelsea and Leicester City could give him better chances.

But this will depend on who the Blues and the Foxes have in their lineup moving forward.
