True Detective
Ani (Rachel McAdams) must deal with the aftermath of a deadly shootout in episode 5 of "True Detective" Season 2. HBO

Well, fans are still getting over the riveting final minutes of episode 4 of “True Detective” Season 2, but the show must go on next Sunday. In episode 5, Ray (Colin Farrell), Ani (Rachel McAdams) and Paul (Taylor Kitsch) must pick up the pieces after that chaotic, deadly shootout and try to make sense of what went down. What will happen in “Other Lives”?

The synopsis for the episode has not been released yet, as the HBO series seems to be settling into a routine of withholding plot details for the next hour until later in the week. However, the promo for the new episode provides a glimpse at the uneasy aftermath of episode 4’s bullet-filled ending.

The teaser reveals that while the Ben Caspere murder suspects may be dead after the shootout, the investigation is far from over. “You really think we cleared the Caspere case,” Ani asks Ray. From the looks of things, the answer seems to be “no.” This is “True Detective” after all and things could never wrap up that easily. The fatal firefight will likely raise more questions than answers.

However, the real drama of episode 5 might be in its detectives’ personal lives. One shot from the promo shows Ray in the middle of what appears to be a custody hearing with his ex-wife. Will Ray lose his son (Trevor Larcom)? Plus, the promo teases an argument between Paul and his mother (Lolita Davidovich) in which she appears to call him out for being a closeted gay man. He responds that he is “starting a family,” alluding to his cringe-worthy proposal to his pregnant girlfriend (Adria Arjona) in episode 4.
