Former President Donald Trump is expected to formally declare his candidacy for president on Tuesday, a week after disappointing Republican midterm election results.

Trump told supporters at a Nov. 7 campaign rally that he planned to make a "very big announcement" on Tuesday from his Mar-a-Lago home in Palm Beach, Fla.

Many of Trump's endorsed candidates lost their elections last week and the Democrats will retain control of the Senate. Republicans appear likely to win a slim majority in the House of Representatives.

Republicans had hoped to secure comfortable majorities in both houses. The disappointing results and Trump's legal battles have helped loosen his grip on the Republican party. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has emerged as a serious contender for the presidential nomination. DeSantis won re-election Tuesday by 20 points.

A YouGov poll conducted after last week's elections showed more voters preferring DeSantis over Trump.

DeSantis says he is undecided on whether he will run for president. Nonetheless, Trump is treating him as a presidential competitor. Trump has repeatedly criticized DeSantis in speeches, social media and elsewhere, dubbing him "Ron DeSanctimonious"

DeSantis on Tuesday pushed back, comparing his landslide re-election victory to the poor showings of many Trump-backed candidates.

"We've focused on results and leadership, and at the end of the day, I would just tell people to go check out the scoreboard from last Tuesday night," DeSantis said.
