  • Health workers can cross border

President Donald Trump announced on Friday that travel restrictions would be applied on Mexico, effective on Saturday, in an effort to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier this week, the same travel restrictions were imposed on Canada but Secretary of the State Mike Pompeo said that the restrictions would exclude trade, the New York Post reported.

“We are working closely with Mexico and closely with Canada," Trump said in a White House briefing. "Our relationship has never been better. We are working for the same goal. Our nation’s top healthcare and officials are concerned of the great public health consequences of mass uncontrolled cross border movement."

“The United States and Mexico have [also] agreed to restrict non-essential travels across our shared borders. Both our countries know the importance of working together to limit the strength of the virus," Pompeo said. "Commerce continues to keep flowing."

Meanwhile, acting Homeland Securt Secretary Chad Wolf said that trade and cargo between the borders would carry on as normal and health care workers are exempted from the restrictions.

"But tourism, some recreational activities and other things needs to stop during this crisis,” he said.
