KEY POINTS

  • Michelle Obama said, "Donald Trump is the wrong president for our country ... He simply cannot be who we need him to be for us. It is what it is"
  • Trump replies with, "She taped it. And it was not only taped, it was taped a long time ago, because she had the wrong deaths"
  • Obama mentioned 150,000 deaths when the toll today stands at more than 170,0000

President Donald Trump responded to former First Lady Michelle Obama's condemnation of his leadership by calling her speech "very divisive" and saying she underestimated the number of total deaths inflicted on Americans by COVID-19.

Speaking Monday night at the Democratic National Convention (DNC), Obama pilloried Trump as a hopelessly incompetent leader incapable of rising beyond his limits and undeserving of reelection in November.

"So let me be as honest and clear as I possibly can," said Obama in her keynote address. "Donald Trump is the wrong president for our country. He has had more than enough time to prove that he can do the job, but he is clearly in over his head. He cannot meet this moment. He simply cannot be who we need him to be for us. It is what it is."

In response to this insult, as well as the many others delivered by Obama, Trump seemed more focused on the delivery of her message rather than the content of the speech.

"Well she's in over her head, and frankly, she should've made the speech live, which she didn't do," said Trump. "She taped it. And it was not only taped, it was taped a long time ago, because she had the wrong deaths.

"She didn't even mention the vice presidential candidate. "She gets these fawning reviews," Trump added. "If you gave a real review it wouldn't be so fawning. I thought it was a very divisive speech. Extremely divisive."

Political pundits noted the irony of Trump pointing out her use of the outdated figure of 150,000 COVID-19-related deaths. By Monday, that figure had ballooned to 170,000, a growing statistic that could cost Trump reelection, according to numerous polls.

Trump gave no other direct response to Obama's attacks beyond a few comments about her husband and his predecessor, Barack Obama.

It was left to other Trump boosters such as talk-show host Rush Limbaugh to belatedly tear into Michelle Obama. Limbaugh claimed her and "the left" are "obsessed" with empathy.

"Empathy is just another word for caring and I maintain to you that the left is a bunch of phony empathetic carers," noted Limbaugh. "They don't really care. They just want you to think they do and that is supposed to convince you that they are special people, that they care."
