Tuesday is a big day for “Twilight” fans. Twelve years after author Stephenie Meyer announced that “Midnight Sun” was delayed, the long-awaited novel has been released, and fans are crying before they even start the first chapter.

“Midnight Sun,” which is a retelling of the first “Twilight” book through Edward Cullen’s perspective, starts with a dedication to the fans. Meyer acknowledges that the people who pick up this new book are the fans who have been around for over a decade.

This book is dedicated to all the readers who have been such a happy part of my life for the last 15 years. When we first met, many of you were young teenagers with bright, beautiful eyes full of dreams for the future. I hope in the years that have passed, you’ve all found your dreams and that the reality of them was even better than you’d hoped.

The early readers of “Midnight Sun” were touched by the dedication. Many of them, some of whom started reading their e-books at midnight, said the note left them in tears.

Meyer announced “Midnight Sun” when “Twilight” was at the peak of its popularity. However, after some chapters leaked online in 2008, she revealed that the project was on hold indefinitely. She shocked Twi-hards with the publication date announcement in May.

“The real reason the book took so long to write is because this was just a huge, pain-in-the-butt book to write,” Meyer told the New York Times. “With some of my books, it was like they were writing themselves, and I was just working to keep up with dictation. That kind of writing is fun and exciting. This was like, every single word was a struggle.”

First released in 2005, The Twilight Saga initially included four books, which have sold over 250 million copies. The series spawned five movies, skyrocketing the careers of Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson and earning over $3.3 billion at the box office.

“Midnight Sun” is available from Little, Brown Young Readers wherever books are sold.
