  • Vin Diesel wants to work with Dwayne Johnson on the next "Fast and Furious" movie
  • Some fans criticized Diesel for issuing a public plea instead of talking to Johnson privately
  • Others begged Johnson to return to the franchise and reprise his role as Hobbs once more

The internet has mixed opinions about Vin Diesel publicly asking former co-star Dwayne Johnson to return to the "Fast and Furious" films.

On Sunday, Diesel, 54, took to Instagram to issue a personal plea to Johnson, 49, and ask that he return to the franchise for the upcoming "Fast and Furious 10."

The two stars previously worked together on "Fast Five," "Fast & Furious 6" and "Furious 7" but had a falling-out when they filmed the eighth installment, "The Fate of the Furious," in 2016. Following their beef, Johnson never returned to the franchise, though he starred in his own 2019 spin-off "Hobbs & Shaw."

In his social media plea, Diesel said he wanted to "fulfill my promise" to the late Paul Walker to "manifest the best 'Fast' [movie] in the finale" and claimed this would only be possible if Johnson fulfills his "destiny" to reprise his role as Hobbs in the last movie.

Diesel's post received mixed responses from "Fast and Furious" fans and Twitter users, with some criticizing the actor for making it public while others suggested it would be better for Johnson not to return.

"This is just rude. If you want him in it, do it privately instead of making him the bad guy to say no. This is a stunt," one Twitter user commented.

Another speculated that Diesel wanted Johnson back because "F9" was lackluster and "he needs [The Rock] back to keep it grounded."

A third online user claimed that Johnson should not return and that Diesel should just give the franchise a rest. They also pointed out that the "Black Adam" star has plenty of projects lined up. "You lost a good one, mate. Time to let go," the user added.

However, others were more supportive of the idea of Johnson appearing in the last two "Fast and Furious" movies. Some fans urged Johnson to end his rift with Diesel and to wrap up the franchise on a good note.

"Please do it, The Rock. I wanna see a Dodge Challenger enter the quantum realm," one fan wrote.

Another netizen said Johnson and Diesel "both need it." A third user begged the former professional wrestler to return to the franchise, writing, "Oh please!"

Johnson and Diesel's reported drama on the "Fast and Furious" sets went public in 2016 when the former called a few of his male "Fast and Furious" co-stars "candy a--es" and "unprofessional" on Instagram, which fans quickly speculated was about Diesel.

It remains unknown if Johnson will give in to Diesel's recent request.

However, Johnson made it clear during a July interview with The Hollywood Reporter that he was not interested in making an appearance in the last two "Fast and Furious" films.

"I’ve wished them well," he told THR. "I wish them well on 'Fast 9.' And I wish them the best of luck on 'Fast 10' and 'Fast 11' and the rest of the 'Fast & Furious' movies they do that will be without me."

Johnson's comments about Diesel during his interview with Vanity Fair for its November 2021 issue also appeared to suggest that he may not be open to working with his former co-star again. The "Jumanji" star said he and Diesel are "philosophically two different people, and we approach the business of moviemaking in two very different ways."

"Fast and Furious 10" is expected to start filming in January and is scheduled to be released on April 7, 2023.
