KEY POINTS

  • A number of fans expressed sadness over the news that Henry Cavill will no longer return as Superman
  • Some fans brought up the speculations that Cavill left "The Witcher" because he was reprising his role in the DC Universe
  • Cavill announced his departure from "The Witcher" in October but made no mention of Superman at the time

Henry Cavill will not return as Superman, and Twitter users have mixed opinions about it.

Cavill, 39, confirmed the "sad news" in a statement shared on Instagram Wednesday after DC Studios co-head James Gunn announced that he is writing a new feature film about Superman that won't star the British actor as the superhero.

The announcement came just weeks after Cavill departed his role as Geralt of Rivia in "The Witcher" ahead of Season 4, handing the reins to Liam Hemsworth.

It was speculated that one of the reasons Cavill left "The Witcher" was his return to the DC Universe as the Man of Steel, leaving some fans sad that they will no longer see the actor in two roles that many have deemed him born to play.

"What is DC doing?" one Twitter user wrote.

"That's so weird that just a month ago, Henry Cavill quit a hit franchise to link back up with DC/HBO to become Superman (again), and they're like 'Naw, never mind.' That's kinda f---ed honestly," a GQ Magazine "insider" tweeted.

"I'm heartbroken for Henry Cavill. This man truly loved playing this character, and he had his own hopes and dreams for what he wanted to accomplish with Superman on the big screen. We love you, Henry," another tweeted.

"DC makes some of the most questionable moves. Henry was great in the role and actually passionate about the character and a fan himself (which is rare in an actor). Huge miss, [in my opinion], and I'm a Marvel guy," a fourth person said.

"Henry Cavill loved 'The Witcher,' but he clearly wanted the studio to respect the book material and it must have disappointed him to see them mock it. He ended up eventually leaving it behind for Superman only for DC to drop him again within 2 months," another user wrote. "This man deserves better."

Some defended the decision to recast Superman, with one Twitter user arguing that DC is "fixing [its] universe."

"This is how you do it, a fresh take on Superman. Make the general audience realize he isn't 'boring,'" the user continued.

Another person pointed out: "Cavill never said he left 'The Witcher' to be Superman. Fanboys just assumed that was the case. Cavill's decision to leave came months earlier, and was just announced in late October after Netflix recast the role."

Others suggested projects and roles Cavill could take on now that he won't be reprising his role as Superman.

"So now that Henry Cavill left 'The Witcher' to be Superman and isn't actually going to be Superman, can we get 'The Man From UNCLE 2' (with, yes, Armie Hammer recasting) going already? Or put him into the next 'Knives Out'? Dammit, 'The White Lotus'? I only want the best for my fave broad man!" a TV critic for Vulture wrote.

"Imagine Marvel making a smart choice and bringing Henry Cavill into the MCU as Captain Britain since it doesn't look like the Superman thing is gonna work out right now," another Twitter user suggested.

"But this means Henry Cavill can finally play James Bond, right?" another wrote.

CNet reported that there was "no great drama" involved in Cavill's exit from "The Witcher." The actor announced his departure from the show via Facebook in October, saying in a statement that it was time for him to move on.

"My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4," Cavill wrote. "In my stead, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam's take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men."

He also left a personal message for Hemsworth, who will be taking the mantle from him as the new Geralt of Rivia, saying: "Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find."

Meanwhile, unnamed sources close to DC told Variety that Gunn, his co-president Peter Safran and Cavill met recently and plan to find another role in the comic book universe for the actor to take on.
