  • Piers Morgan was cleared of breaching British broadcasting rules by Ofcom over his comments about Meghan Markle
  • He previously dismissed Markle's claims of suicidal thoughts
  • Some Twitter users congratulated Morgan, while others expressed disappointment over the ruling

Piers Morgan's recent "victory" in his ongoing feud with Meghan Markle received mixed opinions on social media.

On Wednesday, U.K. media regulator Ofcom reported that a record 57,793 complaints were brought against Morgan — including one from Markle herself — after he questioned the Duchess of Sussex's claims of suicidal thoughts on his former talk show "Good Morning Britain" back in March. However, the media watchdog ultimately ruled that the journalist was "not in breach of its broadcasting rules" when he made his comments.

"Mr. Morgan's comments were potentially harmful and offensive to viewers, and we recognize the strong public reaction to them," Ofcom stated. "But we also took full account of freedom of expression. Under our rules, broadcasters can include controversial opinions as part of legitimate debate in the public interest, and the strong challenge to Mr. Morgan from other contributors provided important context to viewers."

Morgan immediately took to Twitter to celebrate the Ofcom ruling that he was "entitled to disbelieve [Meghan and] Prince Harry, [and] to restrict my right to do so would be a 'chilling restriction on freedom of expression.'"

A number of fans and Twitter users congratulated Morgan, with one commenting that the regulator's decision was "absolutely correct."

"Congratulations on holding your nerve against a Duchess who tries to bully people into silence," the Twitter user continued.

"Great news Piers, I hope @GMB are forced to pay you massive compensation, loss of earnings, emotional distress and anything else your lawyers can come up with. Justice is served FINALLY," another wrote.

"Correct decision. You have a knack for seeing and calling out liars, and nowadays, some people think that if you don’t agree with people, it’s a personal issue with malice. It’s not! It’s just straight talking and independent thinking, something severely lacking in today’s world," a third user claimed.

Others, however, expressed disappointment over the regulator's ruling and slammed Morgan for dismissing Markle's mental health struggles.

"There is a difference between questioning statements and running a personal vendetta against someone, especially in what is supposed to be a professional environment. Meghan Markle breathes, you rage. Hardly something to bask in," one person commented.

"Pier Morgan, I strongly believe in Karma. You know you are wrong, and a lot of people know you are wrong. OFSTED has shown that it’s a weak and outdated establishment; probably has a panel of individuals (just like the Oscar panel). Out of touch with modern times," another critic wrote.

"It’s you that had a problem with freedom of speech, you couldn’t handle the truth. He said it clear and true. She cut you off and you couldn’t move on. If it wasn’t true, why did you walk? [It] seems it’s still raw for you. You can’t stake your claim over a woman Piers. That’s freedom," a third wrote, referring to Morgan storming off the "GMB" set after former co-star Alex Beresford condemned his comments about Markle.

Following Markle's March interview with Oprah Winfrey, in which the duchess said she considered taking her own life after not getting the support she needed from the royal family, Morgan claimed he didn't "believe a word she said."

Beresford then called out Morgan, saying, "I understand that you don't like Meghan Markle. You’ve made it so clear a number of times on this programme, and I understand that you had a personal relationship with Meghan Markle and she cut you off. Has she said anything about you after she cut you off? She's entitled to cut you off if she wants to. And yet you continue to trash her."

This led to Morgan walking out of the "GMB" broadcast. Shortly after, he left his role on the daytime show.

However, following Ofcom's ruling, Morgan joked on Twitter Wednesday, "Do I get my job back?"

After Daily Mail published a report saying ITV has no plans to bring him back, he then tweeted, "Maybe I should just storm back in."
