  • The former UFC champ said Floyd Mayweather and Vasyl Lomachenko are the best boxers in the world today

UFC legend Georges St-Pierre talked about the differences between boxing and MMA fighters and hailed Floyd Mayweather and Vasyl Lomachenko as the greatest boxers in the world today in a recent interview.

After former UFC two-division champ Conor McGregor made his pro debut in boxing against Mayweather, an array of MMA fighters have started calling out pro boxers. And while boxing and MMA are two different sports, few MMA fighters would admit that boxers will always do better inside the ring.

This has not been the case for former multi-division UFC champ St-Pierre. In a recent interview with BT Sport Boxing, “GSP” admitted that while he might be a tremendous MMA fighter, it’s a whole different story when it comes to pure boxing.

According to the UFC legend, he has worked with numerous boxing personalities and even sparred with world champions in the past. Based on his experiences, St-Pierre concluded that though he can box, he will always be more efficient when he’s allowed to use his MMA skills.

As for the outcome of a real boxing match against a pro boxer, St-Pierre candidly said that it’s not his sport and that boxers will more often than not beat him because they often have better stamina.

“My boxing looks good when I’m allowed to kick, when I’m allowed to [throw] elbow, when I’m allowed to take down, because that’s what I do,” St-Pierre said. “It’s not my sport, I’m not as efficient as they are. So my gas tank goes down much rapidly than them.”

The 39-year-old added that boxers may also end up getting beaten in MMA. As per St-Pierre, there are certain movements in boxing such as bobbing and weaving, where a fighter puts his head down and sideways to avoid getting punched in the face, which could easily put him at risk in an MMA match.

“If you do (that) Bobble and weave like this, the guy will grab you and BOOM! (hit you with) knee or elbow. It’s a different game,” he explained.

When asked who he believes the greatest boxer of all time is, St-Pierre named Leonard his all-time favorite. However, he hailed Ukraine’s Lomachenko and undefeated champ Mayweather as the two greatest boxers at present.

“Of all time, my favorite was Sugar Ray Leonard. Right now, [Vasyl] Lomachenko is good, and Floyd Mayweather,” he revealed.
