KEY POINTS

  • One of the major killers of the population today is cancer
  • Good news is that in the US, death rates from lung cancer have gone down
  • This is creating a huge buzz in the medical field

Cancer patients may now have every reason to smile as they start their New Year. Studies have shown that cancer death rates in the US have dropped. While it does not say that cancer was eradicated, it could lead to a better understanding of how preventive measures and cancer treatments were able to lower the death rates in the country.

According to a report in the NY Post, there was a continued increase in cancer death rates in the US until the year 1991. However, this did not become an indefinite trend. In 2017, the number of death rates started to decline. It was a welcoming trend for the health industry.

As per the American Cancer Society’s journal for clinicians that tackle cancer, the decline that they saw comprised 29%. Enthusiastically, the number translates to around 2.9 million lesser deaths, had the numbers stayed the same. It is a very promising data when it comes to cancer. Going back through the data, they found that between 2016 to 2017, there was already a 2.2% decline in the overall cancer deaths.

Significant Drop in Numbers

Cases of lung cancer were among those, which showed a lot of promise. It is also where the drop was really big. Between 2013 to 2017, lung cancer cases dropped significantly by 5% in women and also 4% in men. The drop became very significant for health professionals considering that lung cancer is said to be the number one or leading cause of death among cancer patients.

It also cannot be denied that much can be attributed to the improvements in the kinds of treatment for lung cancer. But this does not entirely eradicate the fact that lung cancer still takes the lives of many patients. Accordingly, in 2017, it was still ascertained that lung cancer remained a major killer as compared to other kinds of cancers.

As per reports, it wasn’t only lung cancer that showed a significant decline. Other kinds of cancer also notably showed a reduced death rate. For instance, breast cancer in females showed signs of slowing down. The same was also shown by colorectal cancer.
