Kevin is often the troublemaker in the Pearson family, but “This Is Us” Season 3 will find him causing trouble among his extended family. The finale showed Kevin bonding with Beth’s cousin Zoe and even heading to Vietnam with her. Beth won’t exactly be cheering them on, Kevin actor Justin Hartley teased.

“It’s not going to go over [well],” Hartley told Entertainment Weekly of Beth’s reaction to the new romance. “What do you think it’s going to be — smooth or rocky? I think rocky. Rocky’s more fun.”

Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) and Kevin have had their fair share of problems recently. In addition to overstaying his welcome at her house, he also got arrested for drunk driving with Tess (Eris Baker) in the car. He was unaware that his niece snuck into the back seat, but the damage was done. Beth isn’t happy with Kevin, and she definitely won’t want her cousin to be his new love interest.

While Beth has already connected her family to the Pearsons by marrying Randall, Zoe being with Kevin is a different situation. It’s an interracial relationship, and as previously reported, executive producer Dan Fogelman said earlier this year that the new romantic storyline would have a “racial dynamic.”

In any case, it seems like Zoe will be around for some intensely personal moments with Kevin. He is going to Vietnam to look into his father’s history, and he’ll learn more than expected about Jack (Milo Ventimiglia).

“He’s going there — it’s a healing thing for him — so he’s going to get a lot of information, some stuff that he didn’t know and didn’t expect,” Hartley revealed to EW. “And it’s going to jar a few things.”

While audiences know that Jack fought in the Vietnam War, not much else has been revealed. Viewers simply know that he went with his brother, Nicky, who has not been seen in any post-Vietnam flashbacks.

Hartley went on to describe the Vietnam storyline as “super heartbreaking,” “shocking” and “not what anyone is expecting.”

Fans will get to see just how surprising the arc is when “This Is Us” returns to NBC. Season 3 will premiere Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 9 p.m. EDT.
