With the 2019 FIFA World Cup in full swing, the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team begins its quest to defend its 2015 win. And once again at the head of the squad is Alex Morgan, one of the U.S. team’s captains and starting forward. Morgan will be one of the players front and center as the U.S. seeks to bring home another World Cup win and maintain her status as one of the top forwards in the world.

For anyone not familiar with Morgan, she graduated early from UC Berkley before being drafted by the Western New York Flash in 2011’s Women’s Professional Soccer Draft. It wasn’t long after that Morgan was named a member of the U.S. National Team for the 2011 FIFA World Cup. She was 22 at the time, making her the youngest player on the team.

Since becoming a member of the U.S. Women’s National Team, she has maintained her status as a consistent impact player for the team in international play. One of her most recent accomplishments came when she scored her 100th goal in international play during a friendly against Australia. This makes Morgan only the seventh woman to score 100 goals in international play, along with names like Abby Wambach, Mia Hamm, and teammate Carli Lloyd. She is also tied with Tiffany Milbrett for sixth on the U.S.’s all-time goal list.

The accomplishment also garnered plenty of attention on social media.

Abby Wambach talked about how Morgan was going to be the team leader in an interview with USA Today Sports in 2013.

“There are a lot of comparisons being drawn to the way that Mia exited the game and I'm sure the way I'm going to exit and the way I'm sure Alex (Morgan) will step up to lead our national team.”

“She's the package deal. The long hair and All-American soccer girl that all these kids are going to look up to and I think she's going to have the same appeal to corporate America as Mia did. I can't wait. Obviously I have a few more years of playing ahead of me, but I'm really excited for the road ahead for Alex. I hope she breaks every record that's ever set.”

And despite battling some injuries recently, expect to see Morgan front-and-center and riding the momentum from her recent accomplishments.

The U.S. National Team’s first game will be against Thailand on Tuesday at 12 P.M. PST/3 P.M. EST.
