‘Wet Hot American Summer’ Star Molly Shannon Talks About Filming Netflix Reboot

“Saturday Night Live” alum Molly Shannon will return for the Netflix series “Wet Hot American Summer,” a prequel to the 2001 film co-starring Amy Poehler, Bradley Cooper, Elizabeth Banks, Paul Rudd and Michael Ian Black. Though it’s been 14 years, Shannon said she loved working with the cast again, but did have a few complaints about the wardrobe.

"It was freezing cold and we were shooting in the winter in L.A.," Shannon told E! on Thursday. "We shot all night in shorts and we had to pretend like it was warm. I had tan tights on and we had to shoot until the sun came up. It was painful. We were freezing."

The film is set in the summer of 1981 at Camp Firewood, located near Waterville, Maine. It’s the last day of work for the counselors, which means they have one more chance to engage in a romantic encounter with fellow counselors.

Shannon said returning to the set "just felt fun. It didn't even feel like work."

Original filming of the movie took 28 days at Camp Towanda in Honesdale, Pennsylvania. Shannon said she was amazed at how much the cast had grown up.

"We all have kids now," she said. "We can't believe all that time has passed, but so many of us have kids and all we talked about were our kids."

The Netflix series “Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp” will air on Netflix on July 31 and consist of eight episodes. David Wain directed the original film, a commercial and critical flop that developed a cult following. Rumors of a prequel began in 2011 when it was discovered that Wain was in talks to create the project, according to Variety in May of last year.
