Hype around the revival of iconic ‘90s murder mystery “Twin Peaks” from Mark Frost and David Lynch has been building for months. Ahead of its official May 21 premiere, Showtime released a new trailer Thursday giving us the most extensive look to date of the show that made Laura Palmer and Agent Dale Cooper household names.

A hair over 25 years after the first installment ended, fans are in for a closer examination of the details around the original series with its new iteration. It’s unclear specifically how the show will reprise the roles of its returning cast members, as details around its plot have remained shrouded in mystery. However, we do know that it will be set 25 years into the future — and, if the show’s teasers are any indication, will also involve slain homecoming queen Laura Palmer (fans will remember that she told Agent Cooper in the original series that she’d see him again in 25 years).

Little is known about how the plot will further the previous narrative other than Frost and Lynch helming every episode, which will ensure the “Twin Peaks” aesthetic is present throughout the reboot. Everett McGill (Big Ed Hurley), Harry Dean Stanton (Carl Rodd), Grace Zabriskie (Sarah Palmer), Harry Goaz (Deputy Andy Brennan) and Michael Horse (Deputy Tommy "Hawk" Hill) are all returning, as are Kyle MacLachlan (Dale Cooper) and Sheryl Lee (Laura Palmer), both of whom were photographed shooting for the show in 2015.

As Time pointed out, Lynch’s “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me” will be integral to the plotline of the new series — though again, it hasn't been made clear how. Fans will remember the film as a prequel to “Twin Peaks” that investigated the murder of Teresa Banks and explored the life of Palmer shortly before her own murder.

If there’s any justice, fans will hopefully — finally — get a closer look at what happened to Agent Cooper toward the end of the second season. With 25 years in the bizarro supernatural world of Twin Peaks to build off, Lynch and Frost certainly have more than enough to work with.

“Twin Peaks” premieres May 21 at 9 p.m. EDT on Showtime.
