KEY POINTS

  • "Resident Evil Village" officially concludes the story of Ethan Winters
  • The post-credit cutscene suggested a potential sequel may star Ethan's daughter
  • The next "Resident Evil" game may serve as the ending for the "RE7" storyline

The events of “Resident Evil Village” revealed some interesting connections between the Mold and ex-Umbrella Corp president Ozwell Spencer and also gave a somewhat bittersweet ending to the story of Ethan Winters. However, this isn’t the end of the new branch of “Resident Evil” games as there are still plenty of loose ends to tie up.

The game doesn’t exactly end on a cliffhanger, but the short cutscene that plays after the credits leaves a lot of questions unanswered. Be warned that there are massive spoilers ahead about the ending of “Resident Evil Village.”

What happened to Ethan?

After surviving what roughly equates to two different versions of Hell, Ethan Winters officially dies in an explosion after the final boss fight in “RE Village” — but not without revealing a meta-breaking plot twist involving the previous game.

In a dream sequence involving Eveline, it was shown that Ethan actually died when he first encountered Jack Baker in the intro sequence of “Resident Evil 7.” It turns out that Ethan’s body was remade by the Mold, which means that he is a being that’s very similar to the Bakers and the four lords of the Village.

The only probable reason why Ethan didn’t turn into a Mold monster or a Lycan is that his body was extremely compatible with the Mold, much like Mia and Mother Miranda. His ability to reattach severed body parts and block hits with his bare arms all came from his connection to the Mold.

However, after getting his heart ripped out, his regenerative powers were severely weakened. He eventually crumbled but not before detonating the explosives placed on the heart of the Megamycete in the Village.

Will there be a “Resident Evil 9”?

There have been leaks saying that “Resident Evil 9” is coming and that it may serve as the final act of the new trilogy that started with “RE7.” The ending of “Village” reinforces this leak thanks to the post-credits scene involving Ethan’s daughter, Rosemary.

The cutscene shows Rose has grown into a relatively healthy young woman. As she visits her father’s grave, a mysterious man in a suit and black SUV appears, telling her he’s there to pick her up. He jokingly calls her “Eveline,” which causes her to threaten him with violence.

It’s unknown which organization this man might be working for. He might be working with the BSAA or with Chris Redfield under Blue Umbrella. Regardless, Rose joins him as they ride off.

This may imply that “Resident Evil 9” will feature Rose as its main protagonist, or it may mean that Rose will play a significant role in the next game’s story.
