Albuquerque police on Monday arrested a Republican former candidate for New Mexico's state legislature for allegedly paying four men to shoot at the homes of four Democratic elected officials.

Albuquerque Police Chief Harold Medina said at a news conference that Solomon Pena was "the mastermind" behind the shootings and that Pena would be charged with several state crimes. No person was injured in any of the shootings.

Pena was reportedly charged with conspiracy to commit a felony, shooting at dwellings or occupied buildings, and shooting from a vehicle.

The shootings occurred between Dec. 4, 2022, and Jan. 5, 2023. The targets were two county commissioners and two state senators.

Pena, 39, lost his 2022 run for state House District 14 on Nov. 8 in a landslide to an incumbent Democrat. A staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump, Pena denied the results of the election and would not concede.

In August, an opinion columnist at the Santa Fe New Mexican noted how Pena was convicted of 19 felonies that included burglary, larceny, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and receiving stolen property and how Pena would not disclose his criminal background. Pena was convicted in 2008 and served nearly seven years in prison for a burglary involving big box stores.

The Twitter account for "Solomon Pena for NM" has 273 followers. A tweet on Nov. 15 shows Pena wearing a MAGA sweater with a caption that reads: "Trump just announced for 2024. I stand with him. I never conceded my HD 14 race. Now researching my options."

On Aug. 30, the account retweeted a report that a Democrat Albuquerque state senator was involved in a crash with three parked cars, with the caption: "I wish Senator Jacob Candelaria @CivilRightsNM a speedy recovery. Even though I am a #Republican and he's a democrat we can't lose our civility towards one another."

Pena has stated that he received a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of New Mexico.

According to Pena's campaign website, he was born in California and raised in New Mexico. He attended Highland High School in Albuquerque and served as a U.S. Navy hospital corpsman in Okinawa, Japan.

In his mission statement, Pena denies systemic racism. It also reads: "Prior to Trump being President the coastal elites, welfare deadbeats, foreign nations and illegal aliens were benefiting at the expense of the American middle class."
