At least three people were killed and 11 others injured in a mass shooting incident during EA Sports' Madden 19 NFL tournament in Jacksonville, Florida, on Sunday. The gunman, who was one of the three dead, was identified as 24-year-old David Katz of Baltimore, Maryland.

Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams said Katz used a single handgun to carry out the shooting and died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after shooting multiple people. It remained unclear whether the gun was legally purchased. Williams described him as a white male who was attending the gaming event. Investigators believe Katz may have stayed in a nearby hotel during the event. His vehicle was found near the scene.

Witnesses described Katz as a gamer who erupted in anger after being eliminated from the tournament. An eyewitness said he did not know the gunman’s identity but noted there were several people who were upset at being eliminated.

“I know the person was a gamer, for sure. I know that they did lose, for sure. I don't know if they came back, I don't know if they went to get a gun, I don't know if they had it on them. I really can't tell you that,” the witness told Fox News.

The FBI said Sunday night agents had gone to the family home of the suspect in Baltimore but refused to give out more information.

Katz was active in gaming tournaments and used the names Bread, Mrslicedbread, Ravenschamp and Ravens2012champ in Madden competitions.

According to the EA Sports website, he won the Buffalo Bills Madden Club tournament in February 2017 and received $10,000 as cash prize. “In what some are calling the most exciting moment in all the 2017 NFL Club Series Championships, David ‘Bread’ Katz won with a walk-off victory by completing an unbelievable pass as time expired to be crowned Buffalo Bills Champion,” the website said. He played another game in the Madden Club Series Championship later in 2017 but was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

Heavy.com reported that Katz had a reputation for shady play and cheating, including making games “glitchy” to his advantage.

Williams said the motive behind the attack was still unclear and the police were not sure if Katz knew any of the victims.

“We have no outstanding suspects at this time. We have one suspect in this case. He is deceased at the scene at this point. He is a white male, and we are still working to confirm his identity,” Williams had said earlier in the day.

“We are aware of an incident at a sanctioned Madden Championship Series competition in Jacksonville. We are working with authorities to gather facts at this stage. This is a horrible situation, and our deepest sympathies go out to all involved,” EA Sports said in a statement.
