Before Prince William and Kate Middleton were married in a luxurious royal wedding, they were a young couple trying to figure out if their relationship had a future. Although the two dealt with more than one break up throughout their relationship, some believe William strategically planned their last split.

In 2007, Prince William and Kate reportedly broke up because the Duke of Cambridge wanted to have “fun” and felt suffocated in their relationship. However, one royal correspondent didn’t believe that was the real reason for the split.

Richard Palmer published an article in the Daily Express after the break up, and claimed the couple split in order to get photographers to stop chasing Kate.

“They were very lovey-dovey when they went out for dinner with Hugh and Rose van Cutsem at the King’s Head at Bledington in the Cotswolds a couple of weeks ago,” he wrote.

“I’m sure they have split up for now but William’s very good at manipulating the media. This may be about giving her a breather from the royal scene as well as giving him time to go off and do what he wants to do.”

Palmer noted that despite their alleged split, Kate continued “wearing the friendship ring William gave her more than two years ago.”

Prior to the split, a spokesperson for Prince William revealed the royal was worried about Kate’s lack of privacy due to their relationship.

“Prince William is very unhappy at the paparazzi harassment of his girlfriend. He wants more than anything for it to stop. Miss Middleton should, like any other private individual, be able to go about her everyday business without this kind of intrusion,” the rep said in a stated.

“The situation is proving unbearable for all those concerned,” the spokesperson added.

Following a few months apart, Kate and William got back together. William proposed to Kate in 2010, and the couple married the following year.

Prince William and Kate, who celebrated their eighth wedding anniversary in April, are now parents to Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
