The news everyone’s been waiting for has finally come - Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are engaged!

The couple’s engagement announcement has brought excitement to theirs fans and followers, who have been waiting on this announcement since the news of them dating first hit in 2016.

There are still so many details to come, like, when will they get married? What will Markle wear? Who will be invited? Will her “Suits” cast be at the event? Will the wedding be on TV for all to watch? Will a TV movie be made about the royal affair?

Some questions might not yet have answers, but this one does: Will Markle have a royal title once she marries Prince Harry?

The short answer is yes, but it’s a bit more complicated than just throwing the title of “Princess” next to her name and calling it a day, as there are all sorts of royal titling rules that are to be followed.

Once married, Markle would technically be a princess because her husband’s a prince by blood, but she would not become Princess Meghan. Only those born into the title, like Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge’s daughter Princess Charlotte, are able to take on the title officially. Since Markle will be part of the royal family by marriage, she will not be able to do so.

Though she won’t be Princess Meghan, she will take on the female version of Prince Harry’s name. He’s formally known as HRH Prince Henry of Wales, which means Markle would become HRH Princess Henry of Wales.

If upon his marriage, Prince Harry is granted dukedom by Queen Elizabeth II, like Prince William was, then the titles would reflect that change, too. This would make the new royal couple a duke and duchess. But what place will they be the duke and duchess of, if they are given it at all?

It would have to be a place that currently has those titles available and royal historian Marlene Koenig told Royal Central that she thinks Prince Harry will be named the Duke of Sussex, making Markle a duchess of the same location.

“Most likely, he will be created a Duke. Sussex is available so [Markle] would be HRH the Duchess of Sussex,” Koenig said. “Her rank would be a princess by marriage of the United Kingdom, Great Britain, and Northern Ireland.”
